Two Bulgarian police officers killed after their minibus crashed into a bus full of migrants

A senior Bulgarian Interior Ministry official said two Bulgarian police officers were killed early Thursday morning while trying to stop a bus carrying migrants who had entered the country illegally.

Stanimir Stanev told reporters that the accident happened at 5 am (0200 GMT) in the Black Sea city of Burgas, after the bus refused to stop at two consecutive border police checkpoints.

In this context, it was reported that 47 immigrants whose nationality was not disclosed were on the bus with Turkish license plates.

Regarding the details of the accident, the bus drove into a residential area when the police stopped their car across the road in front of it, then the bus collided with the police car, then climbed over it and crashed into the bus stop.

The two officers in the car died instantly, with no other injuries reported, and an investigation has been launched into the case.

To date, no charges have been brought against the driver, but Prosecutor General Georgy Shenev called the driver’s actions intentional and persecution.

It is noteworthy that Bulgaria, a Balkan country of seven million people, lies on the main route for migrants from the Middle East and Afghanistan to Europe, and few of them plan to stay in this poorest EU country, and they instead use Bulgaria as a corridor of the Cross on way to the west.
