Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported that security forces have detained a Greek on charges of spying for Greek intelligence.
The agency indicated that the detainee named Muhammad Ammar Ampara is collecting information on the deployment of Turkish military border units, in addition to information about the Syrian community in Turkey and the Turks who fled to Greece after the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.”
The agency, whose report cited unnamed security officials, released a photo of a bald, bearded man with his hands tied. He looked to be in his fifties or sixties.
She indicated that the man was arrested as a result of an investigation by the Turkish National Intelligence Service, without giving any information about the place and time of his detention.
A spokesman for the Greek embassy in Ankara declined to comment on the allegations.
The man’s arrest came amid renewed tensions between Turkey and Greece.
