Turkish Defense Minister: Positive Progress in F-16 Negotiations with Washington

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that negotiations with the US Department of Defense on the supply of F-16 fighter jets to Ankara have reached a positive stage.

This happened during his stay as a guest at the Anadolu Agency’s editorial desk in the province of Hatay (province of Iskenderun), in the south of the country.

Akar added, “We know the White House is in favor of this and we hope Congress makes the wise decision.”

He noted that his country was looking forward to concrete and positive steps in this regard in the coming period.

He continued: “We would like everyone to know that we are not helpless (in regards to acquiring F-16 fighters) and we have alternatives.”

American F-16 fighters are the main component of the Turkish Air Force, as Ankara purchased a total of 270 aircraft of this type from Washington between 1987 and 2012.

Turkey is looking forward to the delivery of a new group of F16 aircraft to modernize and replenish its military stocks.
