Senior Israeli officials expressed shock and sorrow at the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday.
In a statement released by his office, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said, “Abe was one of the most important leaders of modern Japan and a true friend of Israel who led to the establishment of a prosperous relationship between Israel and Japan.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog explained this when he said that he was “horrified by the heinous assassination of Shinzo Abe, one of Japan’s most prominent leaders of modern times.”
He added: “We met when I was leading the Israeli opposition and I was deeply moved by his leadership, vision and respect for Israel. We mourned for his family and all the Japanese people.”
On his Twitter account, Benjamin Netanyahu, opposition leader and former Israeli prime minister, wrote: “My wife Sarah and I, along with the citizens of Israel, mourn the tragic assassination of the great Japanese leader and wonderful friend of Israel, our dear friend Shinzo Abe.”
He continued, “We express our sincere condolences to his wife, Aki, and to the entire Japanese people. I will always remember Shinzo Abe and cherish our deep friendship.”

The assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shocked world leaders, who condemned the incident, expressing deep regret over his passing.
Yesterday, Friday morning, in the Japanese city of Nara, Shinzo Abe came under fire from behind, as a result of which he was wounded and died.
