Tragic end to Tour of Switzerland as cyclist Meder dies from fall into valley

Swiss cyclist Gino Meder has died from injuries he sustained after falling into a valley during one of the stages of the Tour of Switzerland, according to his Bahrain-Victorious team announced on Friday.

Mieder, 26, fell during the fifth stage downhill between Fisch-la-Pont on Thursday after a grueling day during which he made three ascents over 2,000 meters.

Organizers said the cyclist was found “without signs of life in the water” in a ravine under the road, “immediately resuscitated and then airlifted to a hospital in Kura.”

“Bahrain the victorious” stated in a statement the next day that “Gino lost the battle to recover from the serious injuries he suffered.”

He added, “Despite the tremendous efforts of the huge staff at Hor Hospital, Gino was unable to overcome this last and greatest challenge and at 11:30 am (Friday) we said goodbye to one of our team’s bright lights.”

“Our entire team has been devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
