Tragic Aftermath of Turkey Earthquake: 49,000 Dead and 115,000 Injured

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the death toll from the earthquake that hit the country last February exceeded 49,000 deaths and 115,000 injured.

“Unprecedented natural disasters have affected 11 provinces. More than 49,000 citizens died and more than 115,000 were injured, and 14 million people were directly affected,” Erdogan said in his speech at an extraordinary summit of Turkish states held in Ankara.

He added that the Turkish government “will heal the wounds inflicted by the earthquake as soon as possible.”

He continued, “We plan to build a total of 610,000 homes and hand them over to their rightful owners.”

Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale occurred on February 6 with an interval of 9 hours in the province of Kahramanmaras in southeastern Turkey. The Turkish authorities called this earthquake “catastrophe of the century.”
