Japan and the United States agreed to expand cooperation in the field of energy security and the development of next-generation nuclear reactors.
And according to Kyodo News AgencyThe agreement was reached during a meeting between Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
The parties agreed to expand cooperation in the development and construction of next-generation nuclear reactors, including small modular reactors.
Nishimura pointed to the Japanese government’s decision to extend the life of the country’s reactors under certain conditions by more than 60 years.
The Japanese minister said: “We intend to explore cooperation opportunities (with the United States) to make the most of existing reactors and establish stable supply chains.”
Japan and the US also intend to cooperate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies and other energy security issues, the agency said.
