The UN monitors the interest of shipowners in the export of Ukrainian grain

The UN noted the interest of shipowners to participate in the export of Ukrainian grain. This was announced by the UN temporary representative in the Joint Coordinating Center in Istanbul, Frederick J. Kenny.

“We see great interest on the part of shipowners in terms of readiness to ensure the transportation of these goods,” the UN representative stressed.

The UN representative said that the center in Istanbul will consider reducing the time of inspection of ships involved in food exports. “We are reviewing current procedures to find ways to reduce the time of reviews without compromising their accuracy and completeness,” Kenny said.

According to him, now checks take from two to four hours. Inspections are not carried out at night due to security reasons, and for this reason, the waiting time for the vessel in its turn may increase. “As we gain experience and are confident that the procedures work, we will evaluate them. The first such test will take place next week.”

He said that ships under the US flag do not participate in the export of Ukrainian grain and food.

“Vessels under different flags are participating, we have seen ships under the flags of Liberia, Panama, Turkey and Sierra Leone, as well as ships owned by companies from all over the world.

The representative of the organization said that the UN is satisfied with the level of coordination between the parties in the joint center in Istanbul.

Kenny said that the goal of exporting from Ukrainian ports from 2 to 5 million tons of food per month is achievable, explaining that only 370 thousand tons of food were exported in the first week.
