The German government comments on why Scholz refers to Putin in the plural

The official representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers, Steffen Heppistreit, said that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz addresses Russian President Vladimir Putin during their conversation in the plural.

Hebistreit confirmed that Scholz addresses Putin “not in your image, but in your image”.

“I think it was rhetorical,” he added.

Schultz has previously said he did not let criticism dissuade him from holding telephone conversations with Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

Speaking of his visit to Russia in mid-February, he said: “I was in Moscow shortly before the start of the war. I sat at a seven-meter table and talked to Putin. I think it was a four-hour conversation and he thought it was a very important conversation.”
