The French Parliament ratified the protocols on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO

The French Parliament ratified the accession protocols for Sweden and Finland to NATO by a vote in the National Assembly by 209 votes to 46.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said France is joining “20 allied countries that have ratified two protocols.”

The column praised the “historic and important decision” of Sweden and Finland, whose “neutrality has been a fundamental principle until now”.

However, Sweden and Finland need the approval of 30 member states of the organization in order to use the protection provided by Article 5 of the NATO Charter for Mutual Defense in the event of an attack.

Turkey is threatening to “freeze” the operation, accusing the two Scandinavian countries of sympathizing with the PKK and its allies, which it considers “terrorist organizations.”
