The first victims of early departure from the World Cup in Qatar

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, the manager of the Iranian national team, announced his resignation as manager of the Iranian national team hours after his team’s exit from the first round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“There is nothing immoral about not pursuing your dreams,” Queiroz wrote in a post on his Instagram account.

And he continued, referring to the Iranian players: “I’m proud of you, you were great on and off the field.”

Queiroz added: “It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of this football family. I think you deserve full respect for your trust in your country and football fans.”

Carlos Queiroz’s resignation as Iran’s national team coach came after he failed to qualify for the Asian team in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

This came after a heavy 2–6 loss to England in the first leg, to a 2–0 win in the second leg against Wales, and revived Iranian hopes of reaching the second round.

But the Iranians’ loss in their last group stage match against Team USA put an end to the dream of reaching the second round after they came very close to it as they were one point away from qualifying for the final World Cup price.

Queiroz, 69, has been in charge of the Iranian national team since September 2022 and previously coached the Iranian national team from 2011 to 2019.
