In addition to Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillian, the “Blue Beetle” cast includes George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Belissa Escobedo, and Bruna Marquezine.
D.C. Studios will spend 2023 releasing the final pieces of content from the pre-James Gunn and Peter Safran era. The new co-CEOs will work on a 10-year plan to remake the D.C. Universe by their vision. While the movie adaptation of The Flash, which is scheduled to be released this summer, is intended to be the universe’s starting point for a new chapter, D.C. There are still a few more films that were originally part of the D.C. Extended Universe that is scheduled to be shown in theaters before the end of the year. One of these is Blue Beetle, for which the first trailer was released today.
The plot of Blue Beetle will revolve around a young man named Jamie Reyes (Xolo Mariduea), who is transformed into a superhero after an extraterrestrial scarab beetle attaches itself to him and bestows upon his armor and several superpowers, including increased speed and strength. The brand-new trailer that was released today gives fans their first look at the character, as well as their first look at him interacting with the extraterrestrial scarab beetle. Although the trailer doesn’t give much away about the story, it does give us our first glimpse at Susan Sarandon’s Victoria Kord, who plays the antagonist. The newly released clip reveals that this movie will have a lot of humorous moments, the highlight of which is when George Lopez refers to Batman as a fascist.
In the original plan, Blue Beetle was supposed to debut on HBO Max simultaneously with the controversially canceled Batgirl. Despite this, Warner Bros decided to give the film a theatrical release a few months before they were planning to cancel Batgirl to make the D.C. Extended Universe (DCU) more unified in the future. Given that Blue Beetle will be the first Latinx-led superhero film produced by a major company, moving the film’s release date to a theater could prove to be a very astute decision. Recent comments by Sarandon hint that most of the movie was shot in Spanish, and she also dropped a few hints regarding her previous experience playing a villain. Nonetheless, it is evident from the trailer that the movie was shot in the English language. However, they likely filmed two movie versions in the same vein as Prey.
In addition to Mariduea and Sarandon, who will play the hero and the villain, respectively, in Blue Beetle, the cast will also include Jennifer Lopez and Harvey Guillén, who played What We Do in the Shadows. Belissa Escobedo, who most recently played a leading role in Disney’s Hocus Pocus sequel and is slated to play Jamie’s sister Milagros Reyes, is another piece of the puzzle that helps flesh out the case. At the same time, it is anticipated that Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine will play his love interest in the film. Carapax, the Indestructible Man, is slated to be played by Mayans M.C.’s Raoul Max Trujillo, who will also play a secondary antagonist.
Blue Beetle looks to be developing a new backstory for the comic book hero even though production for the project was completed the summer before last, approximately a year before its scheduled release date. Even if some of these characters are based on characters from comic books, the production is going in a different direction from others. The character of Marquezine has yet to be seen in any of the comics we are aware of. Another of the film’s original characters is Victoria Kord, played by Sarandon. Yet, it may be deduced from her name that she is related in some way to the comic book character Ted Kord, a bright scientist and a member of the Justice League on occasion. Even while the teaser may hint at the answer, we do not yet know whether Sarandon’s Victoria is a gender-swapped version of the character or is tied to the Kord legacy in some other way.
The date of August 18, 2023, has been announced for Blue Beetle’s release date. Watch the brand-new trailer right now, and be sure to check back for more information as it becomes available.
