ted cruz i dont think im all that conservative

The man who helped shut down the government for 16 days over the Affordable Care Act told a group of potential donors on Monday that he isn’t as conservative as he seems.

The New York Observer says that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) had lunch with influential members of the Jewish community. The lunch was hosted by former Democratic Leadership Council chairman and mega-philanthropist Michael Steinhardt.
After hearing worries that his involvement with the tea party movement could hurt his chances if he ran for president in 2016, Cruz said that the media made up “a new caricature” of him and other Republicans as “crazy.”

Cruz said at Steinhardt’s investment firm in New York City, “I don’t think I’m all that conservative.” “And it’s interesting that [Ronald] Reagan never once puffed up his chest and said, ‘I’m the most conservative guy who ever lived.'”

People at the event are not the only ones who are worried. Cruz is also said to have met privately for two hours with billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who gave a lot of money to the GOP in 2012.

A person close to Adelson told the Observer that he now likes Cruz, but the business mogul doesn’t think the senator will win the GOP nomination in 2016 because he is “too right-wing.”
