Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Riad Haddad said that his country considers it very important to link it to the Mir payment system as an alternative to foreign payment systems in the face of the Western sanctions policy.
In a conversation with a TASS correspondent, the ambassador added: “The idea of creating the Mir payment system was born in 2015. Initially, it was aimed at creating the basis for an independent payment system on the territory of Russia, especially after a large number of Russian banks were cut off from Western payment systems. Of course, Syria is interested in any alternative regimes to Western regimes, because it, in turn, has been subject to similar Western sanctions in the past.
According to the Syrian ambassador, “at present, in many countries of the world there is a growing need for the distribution of alternative payment systems, since these countries are subject to Western pressure and sanctions.”
The Syrian diplomat stressed that “the global economy is undergoing many changes since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, after which the US and the West imposed sanctions against Russia.”
“This prompted Moscow to use the alternatives and banking systems available to it,” he said.
