A study by the American Rutgers University warned that more than five billion people would starve to death if a large-scale nuclear war broke out between Russia and the United States.
“The consequences of such a standoff would be catastrophic for food production,” said Professor Alan Roebuck, one of the study participants, noting that “the data tell us one thing, and that is that we must prevent nuclear war altogether. “
A study published in the journal Nature Food calculated that rainfall would block the sun’s rays, followed by firestorms resulting from the detonation of nuclear weapons.
Six scenarios were considered involving nuclear arsenals of varying sizes, five of which were based on smaller conflicts between India and Pakistan and one based on a war between the US and Russia.
The study reports that even the smallest scenario would cause famine, with average global food production falling by 7% over five years of conflict.
In the event of a large-scale nuclear conflict, average global food production would fall by 90% within three to four years after the fighting.
The massive decline in crop yields will starve billions of people, 75% of the world’s population, within two years.
