Stoltenberg: Support for Ukraine will have a price for the West

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the West would pay for Ukraine’s support, but warned that withholding aid to Kyiv “would cost much more.”

“For us as politicians, it is important to ensure significant long-term support for Ukraine from our countries. But you will have to pay for this, ”Stoltenberg said at a meeting of the European Parliament committees on defense and security on Wednesday.

He added that “sanctions, military support, humanitarian and economic aid come at a cost. But the cost of not helping will be higher.”

Stoltenberg considered supporting Ukraine a “moral choice”, adding that “the defeat of Ukraine would make Europe more vulnerable to Russia.”

He continued: “Even if you don’t care about the moral aspect of supporting the Ukrainian people, you must take care of your safety. That is why you have to pay the price for support, humanitarian aid and the consequences of economic sanctions.”

“The alternative is to pay a much higher price later,” he stressed.
