Stoltenberg: NATO should reconsider its cooperation with China

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO countries will continue to cooperate with China in areas that meet their interests, but will reduce dependence on it.

“NATO is an alliance between Europe and North America, but the challenges we face are global in nature and we must address them together within NATO. We do not consider China an enemy and intend to continue cooperation with it, if this is the case, Stoltenberg said after a two-day meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Romania, “is in our interests.”

Meanwhile, Stoltenberg noted, “the ministers discussed China’s ambitious military development, its technological advances and its growing activity in cyberspace.”

NATO Secretary General stressed that Western countries need to reconsider their dependence on China in issues such as supply chains, technology and infrastructure, given the experience of cooperation with Russia.

“We will continue to trade and interact economically with China, but we need to understand in what areas we are dependent on China, and then reduce our vulnerability and reduce risks,” Stoltenberg said.
