Spanish opposition leader Alberto Nunez Vallejo said early Monday that his country had entered a new political era after his right-wing People’s Party made significant gains in major local and regional elections.
He added in a winning speech after the election, which took place six months before a general election expected to be won by the right: “Spain has begun a new political cycle … This is a victory for a different approach in politics.”
And Spaniards voted Sunday in municipal and local elections that are seen as a national test for Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Sanchez, who has been prime minister since 2018, has faced a number of hurdles, such as a decline in his image after years in office and a return of inflation.
