South Korea donates $1 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan earthquake victims

The South Korean government said on Thursday it would provide $1 million in humanitarian aid to support those affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan.

The Seoul Foreign Ministry said it hopes for the support of the Afghan people who have been affected by the massive earthquake that struck yesterday in the southeast of their country.

A source in the ministry said the government plans to provide assistance through international organizations in the near future.

He added that international organizations such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations World Food Program are working in Afghanistan, and he believes that the government will provide assistance to Afghanistan through one of the organizations.

The source said that the government made this decision quickly, taking into account the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, stressing that the government continues to provide humanitarian assistance to countries affected by natural disasters and their populations.

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit the Paktika province in Afghanistan, killing more than a thousand people.

And foreign media quoted the UN humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan, Ramiz Al-Akbarov, who said that about two thousand houses were destroyed as a result of a strong earthquake.
