Reuters, citing a US source, said “officials in Washington are discussing a package of sanctions against China in an attempt to prevent and keep Xi Jinping from controlling Taiwan.”
The island’s administration is also discussing with European officials the imposition of sanctions against China, the source said, and asked them to draw up a plan of action that they can implement in the event of an attack by Beijing on the island. However, the source stressed that Germany was “concerned” with this idea.
According to the agency, the discussion of possible sanctions began after the start of the Russian operation in Ukraine, but became more relevant after Chinese maneuvers in the vicinity of the island with the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
