Seoul: If North Korea abandons its nuclear and missile programs, it will reap big benefits

South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sub said on Wednesday that the benefits for North Korea if it abandons its nuclear and missile programs would be significant.

Minister Lee delivered a statement at the “Seoul Defense Dialogue Forum 2022” held by the ministry today at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul.

The minister said in his opening speech that the benefits to North Korea if it chooses the new path are limitless.

He called on the international community to make a concerted effort to make North Korea aware that the cost of continuing to develop nuclear and missile weapons would be enormous.

He noted that since the launch of the Seoul Defense Dialogue in 2012, the ministry has put the denuclearization of North Korea on the agenda, but North Korea is still striving to develop its nuclear and missile capabilities, which poses a security threat not only to the Korean Peninsula, but to the world. .Absolutely directly.

He said the South Korean government had offered North Korea a “bold initiative” that would support the economy and livelihoods of the people of the North if Pyongyang stopped developing its nuclear weapons and moved towards denuclearization.

The high-level multilateral Seoul Security Dialogue was launched in 2012 to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

This year, the face-to-face event was held for the first time in 3 years with the participation of representatives of ministries of defense from 54 countries, the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, as well as domestic and foreign civil defense specialists.
