Seoul discusses Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions with International Atomic Energy Agency

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin discussed a number of issues with International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi, including North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

During the talks, Park stressed the need for the international community to send a “frank and unequivocal” message to North Korea about its nuclear threats, according to a Korean Foreign Ministry statement, stressing that South Korea will strengthen its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and continue to work towards denuclearization. North Korea “without hesitation.”

Park also expressed South Korea’s concerns about Japan’s plans to dispose of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, adding that the dumping process must be carried out safely and in accordance with international regulations.

The announcement came about two weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un told parliament that his country would not give up nuclear weapons and make them a bargaining chip with the United States.
