Senior MEP urges Europe to move to "military economy"

German Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party, the largest bloc in the European Parliament, stressed that given the events in Ukraine, the EU needs “a kind of war economy.”

“If we look at our needs for weapons and ammunition, it becomes clear that we need a kind of war economy in the European Union – although this is not a simple term – in order to be able to provide stability and security,” Weber said in an interview. German media group Funke.

The parliamentarian considered that European countries are now unable to quickly provide the necessary weapons “neither for self-defense, nor for Ukraine.” Pointing out that “new methods” are needed and that EU countries need to increase their capabilities in the production of weapons and ammunition.

Weber added that he was disappointed by the German-French talks held over the weekend, which did not lead to anything concrete. According to him, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron “have not yet been able” to respond to “historic challenges”, as German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and French President Charles de Gaulle did in their time.

“Both (Schultz and Macron) have fallen into the trap of managing their daily lives. Macron is busy with pension reform, Schultz (maintaining) his coalition in traffic light colors. This is a failure that weakens Europe for a long time,” he said.

Yesterday, on Wednesday, the United States and Germany, having long refrained from providing Kyiv with tanks, agreed to send Leopard and Abrams tanks to Kyiv.

Earlier, Russia sent a diplomatic note to NATO countries over arms shipments to Ukraine, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that all arms shipments to Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russian forces.

For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that the supply of arms by the West to Ukraine does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will lead to negative consequences.
