Security Council calls on conflicting parties in Iraq to show restraint and start dialogue

The UN Security Council called on the parties to the clashes in Iraq to show restraint and urgently start a dialogue in order to promote reforms.

The council said in a statement: “The members of the Security Council condemned the violence that engulfed Iraq on 29 and 30 August and expressed their deep concern at the reports of death and injury, and took note of the efforts of the Iraqi government to restore order. “

The Security Council called on the parties to remain calm and restrained and welcomed the parties’ calls to refrain from further violence.

The statement added that the members of the Security Council called on “all parties to resolve their political differences peacefully, respect the rule of law and the right to peaceful assembly, and avoid violence.”
