Sanctions clause sparks controversy in draft G-20 summit statement

Kyodo News, citing informed sources, reports that the final draft of the G20 joint declaration includes a clause in which a number of parties expressed their disagreement on the issue of sanctions.

“In the final draft of the declaration, in which most of the participating countries strongly condemned the military actions in Ukraine, it was added that a number of parties expressed their disagreement with the sanctions and other issues,” the report says.

Kyodo points out that if the declaration (final draft) is not adopted, it will be the first such precedent since 2008.

The G20 summit will be held on the Indonesian island of Bali on the 15th and 16th of this month, and Russia will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the Russian delegation plans to present to the G20 a number of specific initiatives related to the supply of food and energy resources, including building up cooperation in the gas sector with Turkey, organizing the supply of large consignments of grain and fertilizers.
