Sanctions against Russia are not on the agenda of EU foreign ministers January 23

A senior EU official confirmed that foreign ministers from the 27 EU countries will not discuss imposing new sanctions against Russia during a meeting scheduled for Monday.

Commenting on the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Russia, the politician told journalists in Brussels on Friday: “We are open to considering the imposition of new sanctions, but not at the next meeting of the EU Council,” stressing that the EU is focused on implementing packages of nine restrictive measures. which were introduced earlier in relation to Moscow.

The diplomat also noted that the priority of the EU now is to provide assistance to Ukraine, as the foreign ministers will discuss the allocation of military assistance to Kyiv in the amount of $500 million.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence that EU sanctions would plunge the Russian economy into stagnation for decades.

The President of the European Commission said that Brussels will continue to exert sanctions pressure on Russia because of the war in Ukraine and will support Kyiv for as long as it takes.

The European Union has introduced nine packages of economic and individual sanctions against Russia since February 2022. The European Commission had previously declined to comment on the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Moscow.
