Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov said that Washington today, as in the times of the Caribbean crisis, does not want to take into account Russia’s concerns and seeks strategic military superiority, which is devastating to international security.
“If you try to draw parallels between the Caribbean crisis and the current aggravation of relations between Russia and the United States, then in both cases we should talk about Washington’s desire to gain a decisive strategic military advantage that is destructive to international security and stability. “, – Ryabkov added in statements to Novosti Agency. Ryabkov noted that the problem arising from such behavior of Washington lies in the “pathological unwillingness of the United States to recognize the right of other countries to protect their vital interests.”
He continued: “This is the root cause of the current crisis around Ukraine. Accordingly, the analogy with the Caribbean crisis may be that in the early 1960s and now, Washington does not consider it important to take into account the legitimate concerns of our country associated with direct threats to its security.
He noted that six decades ago, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and US President John F. Kennedy were “wise enough to step back from the abyss, achieving a geopolitical settlement, avoiding a nuclear catastrophe.”
He added: “Now, unfortunately, the situation is different. America does not know how to negotiate and, in cooperation with its Western allies, is directly pushing Kyiv to start hostilities on our territory, with the goal of fighting to the last Ukrainian in order to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.”
Ryabkov explained that under such conditions, the entire responsibility for destabilizing the international security structure lies with the United States.
