Ryabkov: Russia can use nuclear weapons if its existence is threatened

Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia could use nuclear weapons if its existence is threatened, and this is provided for by Russian military doctrine.

“Let me remind you that the Russian military doctrine, as well as such a document as the Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence, exhaustively defined all scenarios under which we could theoretically use nuclear weapons. Such scenarios are aggression against Russia and its allies using weapons of mass destruction, Ryabkov said, or aggression using conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened.”

He added that Russia and other countries have expressed concerns about the proliferation of nuclear weapons, as well as their concerns about the transfer of nuclear weapons by the United States outside of Europe, which has been happening for decades.

“We call on the United States and its NATO allies to take a different approach and be guided by responsibility in this area, as Russia is doing,” he added.
