Russian Senator: Western sanctions surprised Western leaders, not Moscow

Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov said Western sanctions against Russia surprised Western leaders first and not Moscow, despite statements by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

In response to Scholz’s statement that the European sanctions surprised the Russian leadership, Pushkov wrote on his Telegram page: “Whatever the German chancellor wrote, the West itself was most surprised, especially since it failed to again harm the Russian economy as dreamed of. (Former US President Barack) Obama in 2014.”

The Russian politician explained that Western countries did not expect their restrictions to destroy their own economies, while noting that European leaders do not fully understand the long-term consequences of their actions. He stressed that future attempts to strike at the Russian economy would only worsen the situation in the West.

“But apparently Western capitals think only about the economic war, and not about the fact that they themselves will become its victims,” he added.
