Russian Foreign Ministry: The West is preventing the cessation of drug production in Afghanistan

Director of the Department of New Challenges and Threats of the Russian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Tarabrin said that the freezing of Afghanistan’s assets by the West paralyzed the banking sector and other sectors of the economy of this country.

The Russian diplomat pointed out that these actions could deprive Afghanistan of the opportunity to abandon the production of drugs.

According to him, in May 2021, before the Americans left Afghanistan, US Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction John Sobko stressed that the country was close to a humanitarian catastrophe.

“At least 23 million people are in need of urgent food assistance. Add to this the freezing of Afghanistan’s financial assets by Western countries, which paralyzed not only the banking sector, but also industry and agriculture,” Tarabrin said.

“In these difficult conditions, the cultivation of opium poppy and the production of drugs remain almost the only source of income for the population of Afghanistan. Given the drought and the shortage of seeds and fertilizers, the prospects of replacing them with other legal crops seem hopeless,” the Russian diplomat said. continuation.
