Russian Foreign Ministry: Actions of Lithuania "hostile" We reserve the right to protect our national interests

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had notified Lithuania’s Charge d’Affaires that if its country does not lift its restrictions on the transit of goods to Russia’s Kaliningrad region, Moscow will take appropriate retaliatory actions.

“We regard the provocative actions of the Lithuanian side, which violate the international legal obligations of Lithuania, in particular the joint statement of the Russian Federation and the European Union on transit between Kaliningrad and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation of 2002, as openly hostile,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“If restrictions on the transit of goods between Kaliningrad and the rest of the Russian Federation through Lithuania are not completely lifted in the near future, Russia reserves the right to take measures to protect its national interests,” she added.

On Sunday, Lithuania announced that it had suspended rail transportation of some cargo from Russian territory to Kaliningrad, and that these restrictions could apply to fuel supplies from August 10.
