Russian court considering liquidation of the Jewish Immigration Agency

Ekaterina Buravtsova, spokeswoman for the Basmansky District Court of Moscow, said that the court would consider the Moscow administration’s complaint about the liquidation of the independent Jewish non-profit organization Sakhnot.

The court received an administrative claim from the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Justice of Russia on the liquidation and exclusion from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities of the Independent Non-Profit Organization for Supporting Relations with Jews in the Diaspora, the Jewish Agency (Sakhnot), where the judge scheduled a hearing on this claim for July 28 of this year.

Answering a question from the Russian agency Interfax, the court explained that the lawsuit of the Ministry of Justice is connected with the violation by the agency of Russian legislation in the context of its activities.

The international organization “Jewish Agency of Israel (Sahnot)” – an organization dealing with providing links between Jews all over the world, as well as issues of Jewish immigration to Israel, was founded in 1929, the representative offices of the Jewish Agency have been operating in Russia since 1989. The Israeli newspaper Walla, citing its sources, stated that Israel resorted to Russian help to ascertain the status of the Jewish Agency Sakhnot and its activities in Russia.
