Russia takes the place of Algeria in Spain

Bloomberg reported that in June last year, Russia ranked Algeria as the second largest exporter of natural gas to Spain in light of the reduction in supplies from this North African country due to a diplomatic scandal.

According to the gas network operator Enagas, natural gas imports from Russia to Spain in June 2022 reached the level of 8.75 GWh (about 685 million cubic meters of gas consumption.

While gas supplies from Algeria have fallen to 7.76 GWh (608 million cubic meters) from 9 GWh in May last year, Algeria currently meets about 22% of Spain’s demand for blue fuel.

At the same time, the United States maintained its position as the largest gas exporter to Spain with a 30% share of total Spanish demand.

The reduction in gas supplies from Algeria, Spain’s largest historical partner in the gas sector, occurred as a result of a diplomatic dispute between the two countries related to the decision of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to support Morocco in the dispute over the Western Sahara.
