Russia suspends visit facilitation agreement with Japan

On Monday, the Russian government terminated an agreement with Japan to facilitate visits to the islands of Kunashir, Iturup and the Lesser Kuriles on the basis of a decree of the Council of Ministers.

The statement, which was published today, Monday, on the official portal of legal information, states that “in accordance with Article 37 of the Federal Law” on international treaties of the Russian Federation, in the form of correspondence between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan , the Agreement on carrying out oncoming flights was terminated on October 14, 1991, and the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of Japan on the organization of a preferential visit to Kunashir, Iturup and the Lesser Kuril Islands of the Sakhalin Region for citizens of Japan and former residents of the islands and members of their families dated 2 September 1999″.
