Russian Arkady Dvorkovich retained the post of President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after being re-elected at the General Assembly of the organization, which was held in the Indian city of Chennai.
Arkady Dvorkovich garnered 157 votes, ahead of his Ukrainian rival Andriy Baryshpolets, who received only 16 votes.
At the same time, Belarusian Enalbek Sheripov withdrew from the elections for health reasons last Tuesday, and Frenchman Bashar Kuwatli announced his refusal to run for president during the General Assembly.
Indian Viswanathan Anand, the 15th world chess champion, will become vice president.
After his re-election, Dvorkovich said: “Many thanks to everyone for their support. I want to thank my team members and all the people who helped us during this time. I appreciate every vote and the fact that you voted positive. The program that we have developed for (FIDE), which we have already tried and are trying to implement in recent years.
