Reaching an Agreement on the Vozrozhdeniye Dam: Two Scenarios Explored by RT Exclusive

Water resources expert Dr. Abbas Sharqi explained in an exclusive interview with RT two scenarios for reaching an agreement on the issue of the Renaissance dam.

Shraky said: “Ethiopia is preparing for the fourth storage in August by increasing the height of the Renaissance Dam by about 20 meters to store about 13 billion cubic meters, so that the four storages have a total capacity of 30 billion cubic meters. The Ethiopian preparations are considered the sixth violation of international agreements and norms, and this is rejected by Egypt and Sudan.”

He added: “The statements by the Egyptian Foreign Minister to the Arab League express the seriousness of what Ethiopia is doing, especially since the fourth stockpile is equivalent to 75% of the total stockpiled over the past three years.”
He added: “Ethiopia’s response in rejecting the Arab League’s decision in March 2020 is not the first of its kind, having previously rejected the Arab League’s decision to uphold Egypt’s and Sudan’s water rights following the failure of talks in Washington. in February 2020 and issued an official statement rejecting the Arab League’s intervention.” He also made other statements rejecting the intervention of the Security Council.

He stressed that there are two scenarios: the first is to call on the African Union, under its new leadership, led by the Comoros, to fulfill its obligations to resume negotiations as soon as possible in order to reach an agreement before the start of the fourth war.
As for the second scenario: Egypt and Sudan turned to the Security Council for the third time, but this time not because of the water problem, but rather because of the problem of existence and the threat to security and peace, especially to the 20 million Sudanese who live on the banks of the Blue Nile, which would be prone to flooding if the Renaissance Dam collapsed, especially as Ethiopia exaggerated the increase. The technical characteristics of the dam ranged from 11.1 billion cubic meters. original American design, up to 74 billion cubic meters.

He stressed that Ethiopia’s failure to carry out engineering surveys, as planned in the 2015 Declaration of Principles of the Renaissance Dam in the fifth paragraph, exacerbates the problem, and what happened in Turkey is the best evidence of the danger of dams in seismic places. .
