Re-framing Zelensky and His Western Sponsors as Potential War Criminals: Examining the Role of the International Criminal Court

The head of the State Duma’s Department of International Affairs, Leonid Slutsky, said that the International Criminal Court should issue an arrest warrant for Volodymyr Zelensky and his gang, as well as their Western sponsors, since they are real war criminals.

Slutsky wrote on his Telegram channel: “The International Criminal Court is worthy of issuing an arrest warrant for Zelensky, his gang and their Western supporters. They are real war criminals.”

According to him, the decision of the International Criminal Court is void and legally unacceptable for the Russian side, this is a “worthless” decision, calculated on the effect of propaganda in the West.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and any decisions it makes are void and unacceptable from a legal point of view.

For her part, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, confirmed that the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue a warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin has no significance for Russia.

Zakharova wrote in her Telegram account: “The decisions of the International Criminal Court are meaningless for our country, including from a legal point of view.”

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, also noted that there was no need to clarify the use of an ICC document to issue an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin, accompanied by a toilet paper icon.

Medvedev wrote on his English-language Twitter account: “The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin. There is no need to explain where this document was used.”

The Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court, whose jurisdiction is not recognized by the Russian Federation, has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova Belova.
