Pyongyang Reveals Which Missile It Launched Yesterday And Was Allegedly Able To Reach The United States

Today, Sunday, North Korea revealed the type of missile it launched yesterday, prompting a wave of criticism and concern in both Tokyo and Seoul.

Pyongyang said it launched the Hwaseong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile at a high angle during a “sudden launch” exercise aimed at securing the country’s nuclear deterrent.

“The exercises were organized suddenly, without prior notice, in accordance with the emergency alert order issued at dawn on February 18,” the official news agency KCNA said in a statement in English.

The agency added that the missile was launched from Pyongyang International Airport in the afternoon, and that the missile traveled 989 km in 4,015 seconds and landed in the international waters of the East Sea.

This was the first ICBM launch by North Korea since it launched the Hwasong-17 ICBM last November.

The agency said North Korea cited “military threats” from the US and South Korea that are “increasingly serious to the point that they cannot be ignored” and ordered all military units responsible for missile operations to maintain a full state of alert. . combat readiness.

This is the second launch of a ballistic missile by Pyongyang since the beginning of the year. Over the past year, North Korea has conducted 70 ballistic missile launches.

On Friday, North Korea warned that it would take “permanent and unprecedentedly strong” countermeasures if Seoul and Washington continued with planned joint military exercises.

South Korea and the United States plan to hold a simulation exercise next week against a possible use of nuclear weapons by North Korea, and plan to hold a “Freedom Shield” spring exercise next month.
