Sources have revealed that the PS5 Pro is under development, and its possible release date is towards the end of 2024.
Later this year, a new PlayStation 5 with a removable disc drive will be made available. To save production and shipping costs, the current PlayStation 5 will gradually be replaced by this new model. This is not the PS5 Pro model, despite extensive rumors.
The detachable disc drive console is “only the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation,” according to one source.
There are few specifics available regarding PS5 specifications. Yet according to a recently released patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny (noticed by @Onion00048), Sony Interactive Entertainment may be looking to “accelerate” ray tracing performance in games.
The PS5 Pro will have improved visuals, performance, and speeds, similar to the transition from the PS4 to the PS4 Pro. However, disseminating any leaked information will have to wait until later.
It’s improbable that the PS6, the PlayStation’s sixth generation, will be available until at least 2028. The release timetable for the current generation of consoles would be in line with that of the previous generations.
In February, industry insider Jeff Grubb said that Sony intended to launch a new PlayStation Showcase “before E3” on the Game Mess Decides podcast. A showcase will soon be held to display titles, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and discuss the new hardware released at the end of 2023.
It remains to be seen whether the PS5 Pro makes sense. Developers still need to release older console generations to increase sales of the current consoles, which have recently stabilized due to chip shortages. Sony is predicting a large FY23 for console units shipped, though (approximately 30.5 million units). Thus a massive phasing out of past-gen titles in Spring 2024 is logical.
Is a PS5 Pro necessary for this generation?
