President Salvador Bukele is running for a second term

El Salvador’s President Naguib Bukele has announced that he will seek re-election for a second five-year term.

Abu Kila’s statement was made yesterday, Thursday, a year after the new judges of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of El Salvador, appointed by his allies in the Legislative Assembly, issued a decree allowing the country’s president to hold office for two consecutive terms, despite a constitutional ban. .

Constitutional lawyers said the presidential re-election violates at least four articles of the constitution, including one that limits a presidential term to five years and provides that a president whose term is about to expire does not remain in office for another day.

President Najib Bukele is extremely popular among Salvadorans, although he is facing growing criticism from human rights groups and foreign governments for his concentration of power.

Bukele, whose current term ends in 2024, was announced during a televised address on El Salvador’s Independence Day.

The chairman of the Supreme Court and the prosecutor of the country also took part in the speech.
