Estonian Minister of the Interior Lauri Lainemets said his country is exploring the possibility of closing the Kuedula checkpoint on the border with Russia to traffic.
In an interview with local radio and television, the minister indicated that a decision on this matter would be made based on the results of an analysis of traffic across the crossing, which would be ready by the end of the year.
He said: “We would like to do this analysis in the second half of the year and it will be possible to see what the consequences are and whether it is justified to continue it or not.”
He stressed that “the decision has not yet been made, and research is only in its infancy.”
Among the reasons for a possible decision, the minister cited a decrease in the number of cross-border travelers, poor relations with Russia and the need to save resources.
It is noteworthy that at present there are 7 border crossings between Russia and Estonia, of which 3 are road and two railway.
