German environmental authorities announced that Poland did not inform them about the natural disaster on the Odra River for two weeks, and the results of the German investigation will announce the reasons for the mass death of fish earlier this week.
This is stated in a press statement by a representative of the German Ministry of the Environment, where he said: “From our point of view, the warning system did not work, since last week we received information about this catastrophe, about the death of fish, but we were not sufficiently informed Polish administrations.
According to him, the death of the fish was recorded on the German side of the border on August 9, and at that time “there were no warnings from the Polish side, although the death of the fish was known about two weeks ago.” As a result, he added, “the German government found out about these circumstances too late.”
“We are actively investigating this terrible natural disaster that has occurred internationally. We are in close contact with all Polish administrations and federal states,” a spokesman for the ministry said, adding that Germany is conducting a study of water samples and dead fish. and expects the result “early this week”.
The spokesman also dismissed claims by regional authorities that water pollution in the Odre could be the result of mercury entering river water, calling it “unthinkable.”
And the German media began last week to report on the mass death of fish in the federal state of Brandenburg. Residents were warned not to swim in the river and not to fish for a while.
