Pentagon: US Secretary of Defense to visit the Middle East this weekend

The US Department of Defense confirmed on Tuesday that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will be in the Middle East for a multi-day visit this weekend.

Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said during a press conference that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will leave the United States for a scheduled multi-day visit to US Central Command’s area of responsibility.

Without specifying which countries Austin would visit, Ryder said the trip would allow the Secretary of State to meet with leaders and many partner countries to reaffirm the United States’ continued commitment to the Middle East.

“Negotiations will also focus on ways to work closely together to enhance regional security and stability and contain potential threats,” Ryder added.
