Pentagon pledges to limit China’s influence for years to come

US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks said the Pentagon is determined to ensure that China is contained for decades to come, and that the rivalry between the two countries will continue for generations.

And Hicks spoke at a symposium in Washington on military modernization about the US path towards China, saying: “I want to make it clear that our goal is containment, because competition does not mean conflict.”

She argued that the “key measure of success” of the Pentagon is that the Chinese leadership, assessing the “risks of aggression”, came to the conclusion that “today is not the day.”

She pointed out that Washington wants “Beijing to think this way today and every day until 2027, until 2035, until 2049 and beyond.”

“The People’s Republic of China is a generational challenge. It will change, but it won’t go away. So we are in constant competition for the advantage,” she added.

It was considered that the modernization of weapons could allow the United States to gain such an advantage.
