One person killed and six wounded in a shootout between migrants in Serbia

A shootout between groups of migrants in Serbia near the Hungarian border killed an immigrant and injured at least 6 others, including a 16-year-old girl, according to the official RTS TV channel.

The girl was seriously injured in a shooting that took place in a forest on the outskirts of Subotica, about 160 kilometers north of Belgrade, where the wounded were taken to hospital, state television reported.

The police did not immediately comment, and their officers blocked the roads leading to the area, located about a kilometer from the Hungarian border.

And the Minister of the Interior Alexander Volynsky hastened to inspect the place.

Subotica Mayor Stefan Bakic said in a statement to local media that the victims, in their 20s and 30s, declined to comment.

He added that the reasons that led to the shooting are still unknown.

Local media reported that there was a shootout between Afghan and Pakistani migrants, likely due to the smuggling of migrants from the region into Hungary, a member of the European Union.

Serbia is located on the so-called Balkan route and is a stopover for migrants seeking to get to Western Europe, fleeing wars and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Although this route no longer has the large influx that was recorded during the migration crisis to Europe in 2015, tens of thousands of illegal migrants still cross the region every year.
