North Korea lifts mandatory masks

North Korea has lifted mandatory mask-wearing in almost all places days after leader Kim Jong-un declared “victory” against Covid, according to the country’s official news agency.

And the North’s official news agency reported today, Saturday, that “the obligation to wear masks has been lifted in all places except frontline areas, cities and border provinces, given that the entire country has become an epidemic-free zone.”

Earlier this week, North Korea announced an “outstanding victory” over Covid, just months after it announced its first cases in May. According to the agency, social distancing measures have also been lifted in all regions except for border areas.

However, North Korean authorities advised people with symptoms to continue wearing masks and asked North Koreans to “remain vigilant” for “anything abnormal” apparently in connection with balloons launched from the south.

Previously, Pyongyang accused Seoul of causing the country’s Corona virus outbreak and threatened South Korean authorities to “eliminate” if necessary.
