The French newspaper Le Monde wrote that the Japanese authorities are concerned about the situation with energy supplies for the winter and are not considering the possibility of refusing to cooperate with Moscow on the Sakhalin-2 project.

The newspaper pointed out that at the initiative of Tokyo, Japanese companies, including Mitsubishi and Mitsui, did not withdraw from this project, which became known in connection with the announcement by Japanese buyers of liquefied natural gas about the extension of contracts for the purchase of gas. on Sakhalin under conditions similar to the previous ones.

She explained: “60 percent of the 10 million tons of gas produced on Sakhalin is purchased by Japan. This provides about 10 percent of the country’s needs. Tokyo supplies 97.8% of LNG. Japanese companies in the Sakhalin-2 project.

However, with the approach of winter, the pressure on the Japanese energy field is increasing, and in Northeast Asia, there is an increase in LNG prices. “It is possible that prices will rise significantly with the onset of winter,” said Rehan Rasidi, an expert on liquefied gas at the Kpler think tank.

The newspaper wrote that the situation in Japan could be very critical, which prompted the country’s authorities to think since July last year about the adoption of a law to reduce gas consumption in cities, similar to the current law on electricity supply.
