Newspaper: Greek intelligence spies on thousands of citizens

The Greek newspaper Dokomento reported that the country’s intelligence is spying on thousands of citizens under the pretext of protecting national security, despite the existence of laws prohibiting the activities of special services in this area without a prior court order.

Recently, a political scandal erupted in Greece after the relevant departments of the European Parliament revealed an attempt to listen to the phone of MP Nikos Androllakis, leader of the opposition PASOK-KINAL party, and the phone of economic journalist Tanasis Koukakis.

In response to the scandal, the authorities fired Panagiotis Kontolio, the head of the Greek intelligence service EYP, and Grigoris Dimitriadis, the prime minister’s general secretary.

On that day, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address that he knew nothing about surveillance and wiretapping of politicians.

According to him, wiretapping of one of the politicians was legal and with the permission of the prosecutor.

“The eavesdropping is unacceptable and he would never allow it,” he said.
