New Zealand announces new package of sanctions against Russia

New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaya Mahuta said on Monday that her country’s government had announced a new package of sanctions against the Russian military-industrial complex and the Russian armed forces.

“We have imposed sanctions on the Russian Armed Forces and a number of defense agencies responsible for the transportation of weapons and military equipment. We are also imposing sanctions on the Sogaz insurance company, Russian Railways and a number of organizations that invent, produce and test military equipment for the troops,” Makhota said in a statement. The minister also mentioned that the new Russian sanctions law, unanimously approved by the New Zealand Parliament in March last year, “provides for a wide range of measures, including a travel ban, asset freeze, financial transactions and the transit of Russian ships and aircraft to the borders of New Zealand.”

To date, New Zealand has imposed sanctions on more than 650 Russian citizens, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and representatives of the Russian State Duma, in addition to sanctions against 93 Russian facilities and institutions.
