Netanyahu asks Gantz not to appoint a new chief of staff during the elections and wait for the formation of a government

Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu asked Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz not to appoint a new Israeli army chief of staff during the current period.

Netanyahu voiced his opposition to the move, stating that “such a move requires the official nature of the state under an elected government and away from any political context.”

He added: “It is important for me to emphasize that in this position I am not excluding any of the proposed candidates who are all deserving of this position. However, senior officials should be appointed by the permanent government and not by the transitional government in the midst of elections.”

He continued: “This is how Israeli governments have acted in the past, including governments that I have led myself, and this is what needs to be done today.”
